Can Epoxy Floor Coatings Be Applied to Wood?

Epoxy floor coatings can theoretically be applied to any surface. The real question is whether the epoxy will stick. Some wood flooring can be a candidate for epoxy coatings, but it needs to be roughly sanded beforehand. The boards would also need to be very firmly in place with no loose panels, gaps, or buckling.

If you want to refinish a wood floor with epoxy coating, it’s probably not in great condition—so in practice, wood floors should not be epoxy coated.

Chemical engineers and flooring experts design epoxy floor coatings to be used primarily with concrete. If you’re interested in covering wood floors with epoxy floor coating, we recommend speaking with an installer first. Your best option may be to rip out the ruined wood and apply an epoxy floor coating to the concrete below.

Applying Epoxy to Wood Floors

If you have wood floors that are heavily scratched, discolored, or otherwise showing their age, an epoxy coating can theoretically hide the damage and create a new surface layer. If the wood has any kind of stain or seal, that needs to be removed completely. Even if it’s old wood flooring that has not been refinished in decades, it must be sanded to create an exposed, rough surface for the epoxy to bond.

Hardware stores sell epoxy floor coating kits that you can install yourself, but these products will not work very well on wood floors. A DIY epoxy coating kit will probably not adhere to the wood correctly, causing it to crack and peel throughout.
